Dr. Marco Ruiz joins our lab as the 2025 International Skull Base Fellow, bringing with him an impressive academic and surgical background rooted in excellence and innovation. A graduate with maximum distinction from the prestigious Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile—the only Chilean university ranked among the top 100 globally—Dr. Ruiz has distinguished himself early on as a leading talent in neurosurgery.Currently serving as Chief Resident at the Instituto de Neurocirugía de Chile, the nation's premier center for skull base and cerebrovascular surgery, Dr. Ruiz trains under the direction of internationally renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Jorge Mura. The institute, recognized as the birthplace of the Journal of Neurosurgery, stands as a reference center not only for Chile but for all of Latin America.Dr. Ruiz is a fourth-year scholarship recipient and was the winner of the National Neurosurgery Knowledge Olympiad, coordinated by Dr. David Rojas Salazar—a testament to his dedication, deep knowledge base, and clinical insight.Known for his precision in every cut, Dr. Ruiz has developed pioneering work on the extreme lateral approach, as well as innovative modifications to the MIPLATTA technique, including the transorbital approach and access to the inferior wall of Meckel’s cave. His contributions are already gaining recognition on both national and international stages, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field of skull base neurosurgery through both technical mastery and academic rigor.
